Simon
started playing at the age 8 with St. Keverne Youth Band in Cornwall
(now the National Youth Champions).
At the age of 13 he progressed to the senior band on Second Horn
before moving onto 1st and Solo Horn. Whilst with
St.Keverne (Britain’s most Southerly Band) the band represented the
South West as 2nd section area champions twice at the
Albert Hall, before being promoted to the Championship Section. One of
the most noted contest wins at the level was the Champion Band of
Cornwall.
At the age of 18 Simon moved to Polytechnic at Dartford, Kent to
study Civil Engineering. Apart from a brief spell playing for Tilbury
in the Championship Section qualifiers at Watford on cornet, Simon
concentrated on his studies.
On leaving Polytechnic with a degree in Civil Engineering, Simon
moved to Guildford in Surrey. He joined Friary Guildford (formerly
Friary Meux Brewery Band) and spent several successful years with them
including promotion to the Championship section. In 1993 Simon won the
Southern Counties Solo title. He also played in the band quartet
winning the Southern Counties and London and Home Counties annual
quartet competitions on several occasions.
In February 1999 Simon and family moved to Whaddon near Milton
Keynes. Simon was invited to join the GUS Band (now Travelsphere
Holidays band). Simon is now the resident principal horn of the band,
which he considers to be a great honour.
Simon is a Contracts Manager for the Civil Engineering Contractor
Subterra based in North London and working on several prestigious
projects for Thames Water.
